Abbreviated History – Men’s First Team
AFC (Amalgamated Football Club) Sudbury was formed on Tuesday 1st June 1999 from the amalgamation of Sudbury Town (founded 1885) and Sudbury Wanderers (founded 1958) making it then the newest senior club in East Anglia.
The first ever game was played at The Priory Stadium (the previous home of Town) on 17th July 1999 against a full Colchester United side in the Harwich Charity Cup Centenary Shield Semi-Final, and saw a 2-4 defeat after extra time in front of 397 spectators.
The club plays at King’s Marsh, Brundon Lane, Sudbury, which Wanderers purchased in 1972 and were previously water meadows, from which two pitches and a training area were created. The first clubhouse was opened in 1985 and the dressing rooms in 1991. Floodlights were added in 1992 and the following year a 200-seat stand was built in addition to the two areas behind the goals being covered. In 2000 a new stand, ‘The Shed’, was opened which caters for 300 standing fans.
Early successes saw the Jewson/Ridgeons Premier League title come to Brundon Lane in the clubs second season – a title they retained for the following four seasons – as well reaching the First Round Proper of the FA Cup (losing away to Darlington).
This period also saw the club chase FA Vase success with a semi-fnal appearance in 2001-02 and then three final appearances in succession: 2002-03 – being beaten 2-1 by Brigg Town; 2003-04 – lost 2-0 to Winchester City; 2004-05 – losing 3-2 to Didcot Town at White Hart Lane in front of 8862 spectators.
During 2003-04 improvements were made to the Brundon Lane ground with it becoming fully enclosed, new turnstiles and a fully automated sprinkler system installed. The pitch was also revitalised with a professional groundsman being employed.
Although finishing third in the Ridgeons Premier League in 2005-06 the club accepted promotion to Step 4 for the 2006-07 campaign and entered the Ryman League Division One North. Mark Morsley became the clubs third manager and took the club to the Fourth Qualifying Round of the FA Cup, First Round of the FA Trophy and the League Play-Off Final where we lost to Harlow Town on penalties. The next season saw a League Cup Final defeat to Ramsgate on penalties and a Play-Off Semi-Final defeat to Canvey Island.
For 2008-09 the club were moved to the Southern League Midland Division and remained there for 2009-10 with Nicky Smith and Chris Tracey in the dug-out. At the end this season a new clubhouse and community buildings – which currently house the Academy – were opened and the main stand was named The Brian Tatum Stand.
For 2010-11 the Suds were moved back to the Ryman Division One North where they remained for the next 6 seasons, gaining promotion to Step 3 and the Ryman Premier League as Champions at the end of 2015-16. This was a significant season as The Academy was introduced and a 3G pitch installed.
Life at Step 3 was short-lived and the club returned to Step 4 and the Bostik First Division North in 2017-18 where the Yellows remained until 2023-24.
In the meantime, two seasons were curtailed due to Covid restrictions, but 2021-22 saw the appointment of management duo Rick Andrews and Angelo Harrop. They took the club to 7th in the league but, memorably, the First Round Proper of the FA Cup where a home draw against Colchester United brought the BBC cameras to broadcast the game live.
Despite Harrop leaving the following season, Andrews took the team to Step 3. Having led the Isthmian League First Division North for most of the season, the Yellows finished runners-up to Hashtag Utd., but won the play-off Final against Heybridge Swifts 1-0.
Marc Abbott took the reins for life at Step 3 and kept the Suds in The Southern League Premier Central for a record-breaking second season in 2024-25. However, with the club's position in that division under threat, Danny Laws stepped in to ensure AFC Sudbury remained at Step 3 for 2025-26.
