AFC went into this Ryman League cup-tie with a number of players missing, Luke Callander, Aaron Greene injured, Ryan Henshaw suspended and Ben Robinson unavailable. Manager Jamie Godbold also decided to give Rob Eagle a breather having played in all AFC’s game this season. He also gave goalkeeper Callum Robinson his debut after his return from his spell with Kirkley and Pakefield and included young Ronaldo Jones on the bench, while Anthony Furlonge returned from Bishop's Stortford to play at right-back.
The tie was played before a sparse attendance of only 62, not the lowest AFC have played before in a Ryman League Cup tie, that honour falls to Burnham Ramblers and the 52 souls there in 2013!
AFC fell behind after only six minutes, the goal being credited to the unfortunate Robinson in the Sudbury goal.
Quick on the draw AFC soon equalised when Jack Newman put Sam Bantick away and he duly fired home.
The second goal came soon afterwards with Newman being the scorer this time heading home from a cross.
Before half an hour had elapsed AFC added a third when in a scramble on the goal line the ball was declared over by the assistant referee, with Craig Parker getting the final touch.
Half-Time;- Waltham Abbey 1 AFC Sudbury 3
Eleven minutes after the re-start Jack Wilkinson (pictured) got in on the scoring act before Godbold decide to give James Baker a rest. On to the pitch to make his debut came AFC Sudbury Academy youngster Ronaldo Jones and he was not long in making an impact as he scored AFC’s fifth goal of the night.
The hosts pulled a goal back with fifteen minutes of the game left but there was no further score as AFC made it through to the Third Round of the competition.
