Bantick Double Does It

AFC progressed into the Second Round of the League Cup, at the expense of fellow Suffolk side Lowestoft Town.

Manager Jamie Godbold fielded a strong side, despite being without the injured pair of Luke Callander and Craig Parker, and also new the dual registered Ryan Auger. Jack Newman missed the game with tonsillitis. Youngsters Stefano Mallardo and Tyler French were on the bench.

The home side did most of the running in the early period of the first half with Sam Bantick showing up well for them. New signing Anthony Furlonge at right back looked solid enough, Adam Tann was operating in midfield.

The first real chance came on the half-hour mark when Aaron Greene and Rob Eagle combined on the left with the latter having his shot save by the Lowestoft keeper Waite.

With four minutes of the half left AFC goalkeeper kept up his splendid recent form as he saved a blockbuster of a shot from Marsden, stretching out an arm to deny the visitor. The resultant corner saw the ball cleared from the Sudbury penalty area and Sam Bantick racing away to the other end of the pitch, the AFC mans shot was blocked.

Town had the first chance in the second period, Garnham having to be alert to push away a shot across the goal from the left. Mcauley was booked for a foul on Bantick before Lowestoft had a good move ending in Marsden shooting wide. Spillane then was yellow carded for a foul on Jack Wilkinson.

AFC opened the scoring when James Baker played in Sam Bantick and the strong running forward went through and shot home giving Waite no chance.

Sam Clarke went off and Ben Robinson came on and played on the right side of midfield.

The visitors drew level with twenty minutes of the game left when from a right wing corner Cole got his head to the ball at the near post.

Robinson enjoying the freedom of his unusual position did well with a dashing run into the Lowestoft penalty area and Bantick then fired wide after a good turn in the penalty area. It was Bantick who then scored what was to be the winning goal as he collected the ball on the right drove his was into the box and fired home a fierce shot.

Stefano Mallardo came on in place of Liam Wales and Tyler French took over from Bantick for the final few minutes. Mallardo put in a strong challenge and was yellow carded and Robinson got himself booked for throwing to ball away as time ran out and AFC went through.
