Grimwood's on fire!

Our recent run of good form that has most definitely coincided with the clean sweep of the first team coaching staff and the introduction of the Laws / Cannon combo behind Mark Morsley was going to be severely tested against a Worthing side from the Premier division and who were flying. 7 straight wins for the South coast team meant that we had our work cut out.
A long trip South in weather that grew progressively worse as the day went on. The supporters were optimistic however and the feel good factor that is permeating all levels of the club now is seeping into the first team at last. Win lose or draw we knew that we'd put in 100% and no supporter can ask for more.
As fans we didn't know but we were about to be spoilt rotten!
I spoke with Clive Pearson, expert Sudbury footy snapper, prior to the game and he said to me..Steve, i've got a feeling we're going to do well today. Damn right Clive, damn right mate.
The game started in the poring rain and it wouldn't relent for the full 90.. but neither did Sudbury. The opening exchanges were respectful and we played our way solidly into the game. Worthing had spells of possession but couldn't really make tracks into our penalty area. Walker picking off the occasional cross and clearing up the odd threaded through ball. Baris and Grimwood through the middle were solid and organised and Benno and Skip either side of them, strong, tidy and when it was required.. no nonsense either. This is a team who play when they can but are not a slave to that and when the time comes to put their foot through the ball they do that as well. No over playing in danger areas.
The Yellas.. or actually on the day.. the Blues, began to push further up field as they grew into the game.
On 19 min utes Reece Harris stretched to block a defensive clearance by Worthing. Completing this he found himself in space and he ran towards the Worthing goal where unchallenged he slid the ball past the keepers left hand and into the corner of the goal. A calm finish after tenacious play. Love it.
That would surely wake Worthing from their slumber.. 4 minutes later and our lead was doubled. Harrisons left wing corner finding Baris at the far post to nod down into the net. The tannoy gave the goal to Joe Grimwood but no, this was definitely a case of Turkish Delight. Worthing huffed and puffed for the rest of the half but other than one shot that cannoned back off Walkers chest, our goal was not really threatened. The same could not be said for the other end where Marks went close on at least 2 occasions, Holland had a shot tipped past the post, Harrison shot wide and there were more.
At the break you wondered what sort of Worthing we would see second half. Well 3 minutes into the half we found out as Callum Harrison drove past the Worthing keeper who in all honesty should have done better but we weren't complaining. Game set and match surely. Worthing pressed us back for a while after that but again without really working Paul Walker.
Just after the hour mark Harris blocked a cross coming in from the Worthing left and instantly he went down in pain. It didn't look good and as he hobbled off and straight down to the changing rooms he was replaced by O'Malley with Benno moving out to fill in for Reece.
A cross in from the Worthing right saw Walks dive out and tip the ball at full stretch to safety but that was all until with 11 minutes to go as a cross into the box from the right cannoned off the shins of Worthing's Joel Colbran and wrong footed everybody to end in the back of the Sudbury net. Oooooh is this game on? It didn't feel that way to be honest. We continued to be efficient and effective and we still created the better of the chances until in the 89th minute Benno escaped away down the right, his marker tracking him until Liam checked back inside his man and fired past the Worthing keeper at his near post to put a lovely gloss to a most complete display.
The supporters Man of the match was given to Ben Hammett who put in another fine display but in all honesty he was just one of many candidates who could have taken that honour. Billy Holland is a player reborn. Baris and Grimmers so commanding. Harrison busy and inventive.. the list goes on and on.
So we go again in two weeks time... where we will end up nobody knows but we'll give it our best shot and you can't ask for more.
Away days..don't you just love them
