Into Next Round

AFC made it safely through to the First Round Qualifying after what turned out to be a comfortable afternoon at The Wardale Williams Stadium.

Liam Wales was recalled to the starting line-up with James Axcell taking a place on the bench, there was also a call up to the squad of young reserve team player Harry Seal.

AFC started with a 4-1-4-1 formation with Ross Bailey sitting in front of the back four and Luke Callander ploughing away up front.

The Hertfordshire visitors started brightly with both Cooper and Karagul shooting wide and over the AFC goal. Ware midfielder Dacosta was in the book early on as he fouled Bailey, from the free kick Sam Clarke headed into the keeper's arms.

The breakthrough came on twenty-four minutes; a long crossfield ball from Ben Robinson was kept in on the far side by Robbie Martin who passed to Sam Clarke, the Sudbury skipper shot goalwards the ball was then deflected into his own net by Fowler.

The visitors did look dangerous on the break and Asamoah and Cooper on the right got the ball to Crilley who shot over the AFC bar, the same player then forced Ollie Bowles in the AFC goal to pull off a save from a long range shot.

Craig Parker won the ball in midfield and set Callander on his way forward but he was unable to capitalise when he needed to cut the ball back onto his right foot and the chance was gone. Cooper and Dacosta put a move together and James Baker was forced to stretch out to concede a corner. Dacosta then had a left foot curling shot saved by Bowles.

The half ended with Ware's Shemu being cautioned for a foul on Blackwell.

Half Time;- AFC Sudbury 1 Ware 0

AFC's performance was raised in the second period and it was to end with three more goals and a place in the next round.

The visitors made a change at the start of the half with Smith leaving and Charles taking over.Three minutes in and AFC were two up, Clarke fed the ball to Ollie Blackwell and then got the ball back, controlled it well and fired home. Ware changed Fowler with Manlove on fifty-five minutes before Callander fired over from a free kick. Martin then picked up his third yellow card of the season for a foul.

A delightful ball over the top and into the penalty area from Robinson found Blackwell who controlled well and with only keeper Smith to beat was tripped by Crilley. A spot kick awarded and surprisingly only a yellow card for the Ware defender. James Baker stepped up for the kick and duly put the ball high over the bar.

Ware continued to try and get something out of the game and Asamoah dazzled his way forward but then shot wide. Dacosta then picked up a yellow card as did AFC's Baker as the pair tangled.

AFC were awarded another penalty with twenty minutes left. Wales who had been lively all afternoon was tripped on the edge of the penalty area by Cooper, the referee pointing straight to the spot. This time Craig Parker was entrusted with the task and he duly slotted the ball home.

Three up and AFC made two changes with Callander and Clarke leaving the fray and Axcell and Newman taking over.

Three became four with eighty minutes gone Wales again being involved he got down the right cut in and crossed into the six yard box and with Axcell bearing down Cooper struck out a foot and the ball went in for the second own goal of the tie.

AFC had another penalty shout when Wales went down but nothing was given, three penalty awards perhaps too many in one game?

With eight minutes to go the Sudbury management gave another promising young player a taste of first team action as Harry Seal was introduced in place of Bailey who had worked hard in the previous eight-two minutes.

Time ran out and AFC progressed to the next round and home tie against Hendon on September 12th.
