AFC Sudbury’s FA Cup dream stays alive after a hard fought victory in extra time of the replay against Bognor Regis Town.
Forced into making a couple of changes from Saturday, in came Paul Hayes for the injured Phil Kelly and Tom Dettmar replaced the suspended Jordan Blackwell.
Sudbury started brightly and fast, creating chances, this lead to Billy Holland opening the scoring, Callum Harrison’s free kick was headed back across the box where Holland pounced and flicked the ball into the net. Sudbury continued to cause the visitors problems with their crisp passing and on 23 minutes Harrison had a great opportunity but blazed over. The half continued at a fast pace and the tie should have been level when the visitors Brad Lethbridge found himself with the ball by the penalty spot with time to take a touch, but his shot was high, a massive chance gone. As the half time whistle neared, Sudbury were under a lot of pressure, but they held strong.
With the second half kicking off it was Bognor who came fast out of the traps, Henry Whytes shot was tipped over by Paul Walker before on 54 minutes. Jimmy Muitt headed across Walker and into the Sudbury net. Before Sudbury could regain any control of the ball the visitors took the lead, from a strong shot Walker could only parry it out to the on rushing Whyte who slotted home on 59 minutes. It was the visitors, lifted by taking the lead, who pressed to put the tie to bed, chances for Lethbridge, Tuck and Walsh saw Sudbury clinging on for dear life, but to their credit, they kept themselves in the tie. Then as the tie neared full time, Sudbury won a free kick 20 yards out, up stepped the Sudbury Captain Joe Whight, his left foot shot curled towards goal, clipping the underside of the bar and dropping over the line and back out, McKenzie then heading in to make sure. 2-2 full time.
It took just 5 minutes of extra time for Sudbury to turn this tie on its head, McKenzie this time the hero who controlled well and fired the ball past the stranded keeper. As the visitors stretched themselves looking for a response Sudbury did in fact have more chances, but to their credit the saw the match out in fine style.
