and the beat goes on...

Three wins on the bounce. Three 2-1 victories. 9 valuable points and we rise to 8th in the table. What a difference a week makes. A good week.
Romford have finally found form recently. You don't go to Maldon and turn them over 3-1 and not have something about you. The so called 'wizards' have so much circus and hype about them since the Tamplin revolution took hold but on a very wet Wednesday night down at Aveley, there was only one team catching the eye.. and that was the yellas ( "despite wearing red Steve?" ) you know what i mean, stop being pedantic, i'm trying to set the scene here... some people
Romford started the game well, full of energy and running and pushing us back. It took us a while to get a handle on the middle of the park. We lined up with Benno down the left and Baris on the right for a change. Slowly but surely we started to make inroads into the Romford back line. Both full backs getting forward and beginning to threaten. Paul Walker is the AFC goal definitely had one of his quieter games other than the goal that came right at the end of proceedings ( "hold on Steve but we're talking about the early stages of the game here") but that is getting ahead of ourselves... my fault, but gimme a break.
Our first chance came when a deep cross from the left found Baris free beyond the far post but his volley went high and wide across the goal. Soon after a glorious chance arrived after a long Lewis O'Malley pass ( i'll give Lewis the benefit of the doubt here, some may say it was a clearance but i am erring on the side of great vision and technique ) found Freddie King who bore down on the Romford goal with defenders on either shoulder. Freds shot however, though struck well, was straight at the keeper who managed to beat the effort away.
Just before the break Benno managed to get a yard on his marker, twisting and turning as he ran along the penalty area from the left before unleashing a shot that left Gibralta's national keeper floundering and buried itself into the Romford net. We did celebrate!
A goal up at the break seemed a just reward for the way we had played.
A minute into the 2nd half and our lead had been doubled. Benno crossing from the left after checking back out and delivering a perfect ball for the rejuvenated Ben Hunter to head home unmarked. Have it! Our defence was so well marshalled that Romford struggled to cause any concern for the watching Sudbury faithful. The real shame was that we couldn't extend our lead and put the game to bed. We had some perfect chances to but these came and went. Baris was fouled in the box after a marauding run. Another penalty for Callum but this time although he struck it well enough it was too close to the keeper and at a good height for the keeper. Another time Tom Maycock found himself with the ball at his feet a distance out, the goal exposed as the keeper was stranded out to the right but Tom's confidence just isn't allowing him to make decisions at the moment that in the cool light of day he would snaffle up. A firm straight drive after a touch to control would have left the keeper in no mans land and the ball in the back of the net, the game secure, but Tom tried to hard to make sure, taking touch after touch until he was crowded off. The lad needs to score again to clear the fog but his all round workrate and commitment cannot be questioned... at both ends of the pitch.
Reece Harris came off the bench to stretch Romford further as we galloped forward at will but goal 3 just wouldn't happen for us. In the depths of injury time Romford scored from a close range header after bombarding the box with crosses for a few minutes but it was too little too late for the wizards. It was AFC who had cast the spell.
After the final whistle there were some unpleasant scenes around the tunnel area when a Romford player simply lost the plot emotionally, threatening to 'cut' someone and rather shamefully there seemed to be nobody with any authority on the Romford side of things to help cool the situation down.
Witham next for the Yellas on Saturday.. a ground that has seen scant reward and some shambolic performances in recent years. We are made of different things now though , oh yes.
Let's dance!
