Defeat on the road

Dud in the mud!
The scene was set. Two wins on the bounce. The sun was shining. Cambridge City hosting the yella boys.
Twas a game of two halves.
The first half saw us struggle to gain any foothold in the game. The first 5-10 minutes we got the ball down a bit and tried to play but then we seemed to be content with leathering the ball into space, playing head tennis and generally not keeping possession of a football. All things that played into Cambridge hands. There must be something in the water out Cambridge way because they appear to breed them big.. or recruit them big. Each Cambridge player appeared to be at least 8ft tall. Taking the aerial route was something they would lap up. The pitch was in pretty poor condition, especially down the flanks.
Freddie King had a decent chance quite early on after a Benno cross from the right found him in space in the penalty area but his scissor volley didn't connect as we'd all have hoped and the ball bobbled wide. Other than a Critchley shot that flew into the side netting that was really the sum total of our attacking play. The rest of the half was spent with the ball somewhere up in the blue or somewhere down in the mud. The one really moment of quality in the first half saw Cambridge deservedly take the lead when a shot from just outside the box beat Walker's outstretched fingertips. Cambridge were the better side for sure during that opening 45 but it was generally an awful scrappy spectacle.
The second half saw Reece Harris replace Harry Critchley.
The second half also saw us trying to play football. Keeping possession, switching the play and generally putting Cambridge under pressure in a manner we certainly did not manage during the first 45.
The longer the half went on, the more we threw caution to the wind, the more last ditch our defending became. At the other end however we made definite inroads and we were so close to an equaliser on numerous occasions. Harrisons shot from the edge of the box was well struck but too close the the keeper. A Tom Maycock flick which was hacked off the line. A Harrison free kick that was superbly tipped onto the bar by the Cambridge keeper ( didn't get a corner for it though... linesman was caught napping there ) of course in the 90th minute we got hit with a sucker punch with a pile driver that looked like it would be meat and drink to Paul Walker but somehow caught him out and flashed in off the underside of the crossbar.
Ahhhh if only... lot's of moments we can say that to. So close in that 2nd half but still so far. If only we'd turned up during the opening 45..
