Well that was a frustrating afternoon again. The joys of the Sudbury of being a Sudbury fan. A first half where we bossed proceedings but failed to capitalise. A second half where we had plenty of possession but just didn't work the opposition keeper. A goal against and nothing happening in front of goal.
A lovely sunny winter's day in Soham saw us revert to a flat back 4. Baris and Harris as full backs. ABD in at centre back. A midfield with Hammett and Holand reinstated, a return to the starting lineup for top scorer Maycock and a first start for Cassell.
We started well, pinning Soham back, a few penalty shouts, a Grimwood header that was disallowed for a push. A whistle happy referee stopped the game from flowing on what was a boggy pitch as did a flag happy linesman.
As the half progressed we remained in the ascendancy but without working the keeper despite creating numerous opportunities.
It was good to see the added composure at the back of Bailey-Dennis. He's a proper unit but his touch is decent and if he could stay fit he's a real benefit to the side both defensively and offensively.
The second half saw us lose some of the control that we had during the first 45. We weren't on the back foot but we stopped getting in and around the Soham box as much. Of course the inevitable happened... chance to Soham as the ball dropped in the box.. slammed past Walker from close range. The kind of finish we lacked first half. We reacted by bringing on King and reshuffling the pack a little but it wasn't until the final 10 minutes or so that we started to push back. 3 let chances fell to Bailey-Dennis as he pushed up himself as well. these chances all went begging without working the keeper at all. On another day we could have won this game, actually should have won this game but our failing appears to be converting good possession into real chances.
The final chance of the game fell to Soham when a breakaway saw their forward, clean through on his own, shoot wide with just Walker to beat.
The thumping of Histon aside, scoring goals is becoming an issue. 2 goals scored in the last 2 months ( other than the Histon result ), lots of the ball but making that count just isn't happening right now. It's a concern for sure. I remember too well the tailed of last season when we just didn't turn up.. we can't allow that to happen again this season or we'll be looking way to hard over or shoulders. Not fun that!
