All that momentum we were building dissipated down the A12 at Brentwood.
The sun was shining, the mood was buoyant, we had virtually a full squad to select from.
I'm not going to go into a great detail about the Brentwood debacle. The ball is a precious thing. If you look after it you are going to prosper. We didn't look after it, not at all. We played blind passes to opponents, square balls easily cut out, played ourselves in to trouble time and time again. We'd gift away possession in a dangerous area and then try desperately to deal with the consequences. It's how we conceded early on. It's how Joe Grimwood ended up upending their attacker for their 2nd goal, gaining a card in the process, it's how we gifted then a 2nd penalty in the 2nd half, this time ending with Paul Walker carded. We never got going, even after Tom Maycock continued his hot scoring streak by levelling on 18 minutes at the 2nd attempt. It wasn't good enough from a squad who are capable of reaching great heights. It was self inflicted wounds from first whistle to the last. Hullbridge away was our most lacklustre performance of the season, Coggeshall away was simply impatient and poor but this defeat was different entirely. It was error after error after error with barely a positive to take from proceedings.
In summary, Brentwood took the lead through us gifting away possession in a dangerous area and running through to finish. We equalised when a Marks flick on found Maycock on the left who finished at the 2nd time of asking. Another error and Grimwood brought down their forward in the box. Penalty 2-1. 2nd half you think it's got to get better.. it doesn't. Triple substitution. No momentum. No Pressure. Another mistake and Walker is adjudged to have brought down their forward in the box. 3-1 Brentwood game over. No response from us. Keeper having literally nothing to do other than the Maycock goal.
Brentwood were not special in any way shape or form but they kept it simple and made far fewer mistakes. Sometimes that's all you need to do. Be patient and keep it simple. Enough said.
