First half goal and red card for Bowers sees them take all three points

A.F.C. Sudbury Versus Bowers and Pitsea The Bostik League Division One North 01/09/2018 The King’s Marsh Stadium

A.F.C. Sudbury welcomed Bowers and Pitsea to the King’s Marsh looking to follow up on the epic tussle with Mildenhall Town at recreation way on Monday afternoon where the sides had a share in a six-goal thriller.

A.F.C. Sudbury kicked off the match attacking from left to right as viewed from the Brian Tatum stand. Bowers and Pitsea had the first strike on goal when, after two minutes Ryan Sammans fired high over the home crossbar. On six minutes a foul on Callum Harrison saw Billy Holland deliver a teasing free-kick which was headed partially clear with the ball whipped back in and just evading the onrushing Jordan Blackwell and Ben Hunter. Max Cornhill whipped a fine cross in from the right wing for Bowers and Pitsea which Paul Walker swooped low to gather with supreme agility. On eight minutes Sudbury fell behind. A foul on Lewis Manor led to a free-kick which Correy Davidson played neatly along the ground, catching out the home defence which Quentin Monville slotted home with no trouble from close range.

Sudbury were struggling to get a passing game going and to get a foothold on the game. Callum Harrison hit a twenty yard shot wide on seventeen minutes, but it was the visitors who were bossing possession. Two minutes on and Cornhill was glancing his header just wide of the home goal before Martyn Stokes headed over a right wing corner. On twenty-eight minutes there was controversy when David Knights was sent off for a trip on A.F.C. Sudbury goalkeeper Paul Walker when he had retrieved the ball, which looked to be a harsh decision. A minute on and Ben Hunter’s shot was straight at Andrew Wilton in the Bowers and Pitsea goal and Manor’s lob went just wide of goal as Bowers and Pitsea continued to dominate possession despite their playing with ten men.

Goal-scorer Quentin Monville was replaced on thirty-five minutes as the visitors looked to change formation in the wake of the sending off. Paul Walker was well-placed to gather a shot on the turn by Davidson before Baris Altintop fired wide of the right hand post for A.F.C. Sudbury. Right on the whistle Billy Holland fired a shot just wide as Bowers and Pitsea went in to the break a goal to the good.

HT 0-1

Paul Hayed poked a shot just over the Bowers and Pitsea crossbar after forty-eight minutes as the second half began. On fifty-four minutes great work from Darryl Coakley saw the ball played into the path of Phil Kelley whose cross from the left was too strong and drifted out for a goal kick. On sixty-four minutes Joe Whight hit a free-kick against the wall before Tyler French received a yellow card a minute later for holding as Sudbury continued to struggle to find an opening.

Tyler French was then on hand to make a telling defensive tackle as Sudbury tried to find their rhythm. On seventy-two minutes Jordan Blackwell hit a twenty-five yard shot wide of goal before Jamie Dicks hit a shot from just outside the home penalty area which Paul Walker saved magnificently. Bowers and Pitsea put the loose ball into the net, but the offside flag was confidently raised and the danger passed. A nasty coming together of heads between Billy Holland and Bowers and Pitsea’s Lewis manor saw the game held up before Tom Dettmar came on to replace Ben Hunter for A.F.C. Sudbury. Two minutes on and Joe Grimwood came on for Paul Hayes.

Billy Holland was booked for holding with ten minutes left on the clock. Leahy headed a Jamie Dicks corner wide for the visitors. Substitute Charlee Hughes found himself clear on goal, only to be denied by another fine block by Paul Walker. Five minutes were added to the second forty-five, but A.F.C. Sudbury couldn't create that gilt-edged chance and Bowers and Pitsea ran out deserved winners on a frustrating afternoon for the home club.
