Kelly Of The Mark

AFC went to the Wallace Binder Ground and took on Maldon and Tiptree for the second time, the first game being abandoned in August due to floodlight failure.

This time they came away after ninety or so minutes winning the game 2-1 with the winner coming deep in stoppage time with new striker Phil Kelly (pictured) getting his first goal for the club.

There were a number of changes to the starting line-up with Ryan Horne starting on the bench after taking a knock on Saturday, Ben Hunter took over, and Max Booth was also amongst the substitutes and Ian Miller on the pitch. Up front Mekhi McKenzie played instead of Tom Dettmar.

The Essex side took an eighth minute lead with Kieran Bailey headed home with the AFC players appealing for offside. It took until stoppage time in the first half before Sudbury drew level, Phil Kelly fed a long pass from Tyler French into the path of Mekhi McKenzie and he finished nicely.

AFC took control of the game in the second period, early on McKenzie headed over from a French free kick. Horne came into the action just after the hour mark with Jake Clowsley going off and. It was Horne who had the next chance for AFC with Kelly doing well pulling the ball back to McKenzie and then the substitute fired wide at the far post with keeper Tim Brown beaten.

With twenty minutes to go AFC introduce another Academy player as Adam Dunnage came of to make his first team debut, Miller was the player going off. Brown was in action soon afterwards saving with his leg to stop Kelly from scoring, he then got involved with stopping a Billy Holland header.

Jake Jessup in the Sudbury goal had a relatively trouble free evening but was alert enough to stop a header from Oluwole Akinsaya with eight minutes of normal time left.

The referee indicated there were four added minutes and in the third of them AFC got the winner. Phil Kelly was the scorer as he netted his first Sudbury goal, taking the ball on the run and firing passed Brown much to the delight of the AFC supporters in the crowd of 110.

The three points takes AFC up another place as they now sit in thirteenth place in the Bostik North table.

BELOW IS A REPORT OF THE GAME THAT WAS ABANDONED ON 15th AUGUST 2018

AFC had an abortive trip to Park Drive Maldon as after forty-five minutes the floodlights failed. At the time the sides were level with a goal apiece.

There was only one change to Saturday's line-up with Tyler French coming in at centre back with Rhys Henry dropping to the bench.

The visitors took the lead on twenty-four minutes when L'heureux Menga took advantage of some poor defending by Forrest and calmly slotted the ball past keeper Walker in the Maldon goal.

The home side equalised on thirty-five when passing movement down their left hand side saw the ball go to Ogedi-Uzokwe who fired home. There was hope that the goal would not stand as the assistant referee had his flag raised but after consulting him the referee decided it was a goal.

Half time came and the floodlights that had been on throughout the game slowly all went off. A couple came back on but not enough to play the game. There was delay of some thirty minutes before the officials abandoned the game with the light not able to be restored.

So Menga' s goal will not count but the yellow card picked up by Adam Mills will.

AFC Sudbury: 1 Paul Walker, 2 Alfie Carroll, 3 Joe Claridge, 4 Jack Newman, 5 Julian Smith, 6 Tyler French, 7 Tevan Allen, 8 Jake Turner, 9 L'heureux Menga, 10 Dave Cowley, 11 Adam Mills
Subs: 12 Ollie Dunlop, 14 Rhys Henry, 15 Jake Colclough, 16 Louis Blake, 17 Jeremiah Kamanzi

So onto the FA Cup on Saturday and a visit from Aveley.
