Three Goal Victory

AFC went into the game seeking valuable Ryman Premier League points, and putting all thoughts of the FA Trophy out of their minds. They did so and gained three league points to propel them up the table.

Manager Jamie Godbold made a change to his starting line-up with Sam Bantick, Saturday’s hero, replacing Rob Eagle who was suffering a slight strain.

Two first half goals and one late on saw the Sussex side have to make the long journey home pointless.

The visitors started brightly enough forcing two corners in the first five minutes and had a Dan Pearse fierce shot go wide of the AFC goal.

For Sudbury Cambridge United loanee Dylan Williams had the first chance the ball coming back to him from a Ryan Henshaw effort, but it curled wide of the far post.

For the visitors Jack Brivio fed Lee Harding and from his cross Jonah Ayunga headed over the AFC bar.

On twenty-four minutes AFC took the lead, Harding slipped and Craig Parker got the ball on the edge of the penalty area and got it to Sam Bantick who fired it home.

Parker was then in on goal but Burgess Hill keeper Josh James came out and smothered the ball. The visitors countered and from a corner Ayunga headed wide with Marcus Garnham unable to get to the ball.

The Sudbury goalkeeper then found his name in the referee’s notebook as he went rushing out of his area in an attempt to clear the ball. He got his timing wrong and Ayunga went up in the air as a free kick was conceded.

Williams went down in the middle of the park and it appeared that a collision had occurred but the officials saw nothing. After treatment the midfielder was able to continue.

A minute from the break Erkan Okay got the ball to Bantick who had a shot that James saved low down. The AFC lead was doubled in stoppage time Tyler French got the ball to Bantick and he in turn fed James Baker whose shot hit the post and it went into the back of the net.

The visitors made a change with Thompson not returning and Guy Bolton taking over. Bantick was then involved again for Sudbury as he was the recipient of a good ball from French and Parker but his shot went wide.

Clarke unusually lost control of the ball in midfield but Harding was unable to make use of the chance. Baker found himself booked after a tangle with Will Miles, the second time the two had clashed.

French then got down the right side and made the wrong choice as he back heeled the ball instead of crossing into the six-yard box where two of his AFC teammates were.

Williams picked up a booking for handing the ball, his fourth since joining the club.

Both side made substitutions Izuchukwu going off for Burgess Hill and Tyrell Richardson-Brown coming on, while Baker went off and Luke Callander took over for AFC.

Ten minutes later Williams left the fray and Jordan Blackwell came on while Pearse went off and Ashley Nzala came on for ‘The Hillians’.

One of the sporadic attacks for the visitors saw Ayunga head over, while Parker had a shot saved low down for the home side. Another booking saw Okay pick up his third in as many games for AFC.

With a minute of normal time left Liam Wales replaced Parker and after Pointing for Burgess Hill was booked for fouling Blackwell the AFC substitute finished the game. Callander from inside his own half played in Liam Wales who had only James in the visitor’s goal to beat and as he came out the Sudbury man lobbed the ball over his head and into the back of the net.

It was a comfortable win, three goals and three points that saw AFC rise four places up the table.
