Since we played Needham Market on New Year's Day, actually scrap that, since we lost two players to an over zealous official at Royston early in January we seem to have become somewhat forgetful. First at Royston we lost two players, then we lost our way at home to Alvechurch, then lost MIllsey and Nuneaton Borough ( clearly even more forgetful than we are ) lost their place in the League and took 6 of our points with them. Although away at Barwell we found a way to take a point as the hosts lost their shooting boots, at Leiston on Saturday we clearly found that we have lost our mojo.
Why is that? Only 4 weeks ago we were looking at the middle of the table as the next destination and we were buzzing. Well, confidence, morale and belief has been eroded over a few weeks largely by events totally outside of our control and we probably feel a 'wittle bit sowwy for ourselves' and it's only human I guess but after we tamely fell to Leiston we need to shake that off and go again with more bounce, more fight and a siege mentality that whatever the league throws at us we'll laugh it off and keep coming.
Leiston away was a story of two early goals that did for us, both coming down our right flank, the first a header within the opening 10 minutes from a player who even by their own manager's admission cannot head the ball, and the second straight after half time when half of our travelling faithful were still finishing up at the bar.
In between those Bradbrook made some decent saves and our back line put in some decent stops to allow Callum Page the chance to open his account for us after Joe Neal had escaped down the left to cut the ball back to him. Just inside the box, Pagey cut back inside his marker and fired across goal into the top corner to level the scores. A typical 23/24 Sudbury goal as we don't seem to score tap ins and scruffy ones, but bangers? oh yes we can pull out a banger!
During the remainder of the opening half we had some spells of possession but didn't again work the Leiston stopper.
In the 2nd half after we had been caught cold and conceded we huffed and puffed a lot and Neal had a cross goal effort palmed out but we didn't really work the keeper again. Sure for the final 10 minutes or so we pinned Leiston back and put a few balls into the box, got a bit big and aerial on them and threw a few more resources up but although it looked and felt better the result was the same and we fairly tamely fell to yet another 2-1 defeat. Look back at the results this season, that seems to be a very common result. It shows we are close but not quite at the levels. If I remember back to when we fell by the same scoreline to Redditch just before Christmas, although we didn't create too much in the first half, in the 2nd we absolutely battered them, well we need to get back to those levels of intensity pretty darn quick.
Come on you Yellows, we have the faith, you just need to believe it.
