It was a heartbreaking afternoon turned evening for the Suds, as we lose out to Alvechurch. Marc was forced into two changes due to THOSE two red cards for Joe Neal and Romario Dunne. Our defence stayed the same though as we lined up with Bradbrook in goal, a back three of Lewis, Oluwatimilehin, and Dickens. In the centre of the pitch, we had Tarpey, Hunter, Turner and Brown. Our front three was much changed however, as Malachi Napa and Reuben Marshall replaced our suspended players, meaning it was a front three of Napa, Marshall, and Mills.
The match got off to a scrappy start, no chances for either side, just a few corners. The cold definitely not making things easy for the players of both sides. The one real chance of the first half went to the visitors. A quick counterattack and Bradders had to make a very good close range save, before Olu managed to race back and block the attempt of a follow up. For the Alvechurch bench there was some worrying signs as their goalkeeper went down with what looked like a hamstring injury. Fortunately, he was able to carry on. So, the first half ended, maybe being one of the most uneventful halves of football this season
In the second half, the match attempted to liven up a bit, but neither side could take advantage of the other’s errors, passes going astray, poor touches and wayward shots. The closest we went in the match came from an incredibly tight angle, Millsey almost found a way to squeeze his shot in but it went just inches wide of the far post. At the other end, the biggest chance of the match so far fell to the substitute Allen-Hadley who with all the time in the world and the goal gaping dragged his shot wide of the Yellow goal. Then, with ten minutes remaining, Alvechurch had the ball in the net prompting their coaches to be on the pitch... but it was ruled offside. With two minutes to go, we got a dangerous free kick on the edge of the box, Millsey stepped up, but he couldn’t quite get it over the wall. The Alvechurch players, seeing that there weren’t many Sudbury players back, broke on the counter, and despite pressure from Olu, Dan Sweeney calmly slotted past Bradders to send the opposition Fans, Players and Coaches into Euphoria.
Well, I think you could call that a match in which neither side deserved to win nor lose. Disappointing to lose in the final minute, but that’s the nature of football sometimes. What is important though, is how we bounce back, and we know with the group of players and this coaching staff, that we will. So, we turn our attention to Barwell, the team we drew with on the opening day of the season, with the aim of returning to winning ways.
