Despite a slow start for both sides, we dominated possession throughout the early stages of the game - a theme which would continue throughout the match. However, the first golden opportunity fell to the away side. Bradbrook punched away an in swinging corner. It only went as far as Toiny-Pendred, who 10 yards from goal, dragged his shot well wide. 60 seconds later, there was a huge opportunity for MacAire, who drove towards the yellow goal, nobody with him... but Bradbrook bravely rushed out to make a superb one on one save. The two best chances of the match so far both going to the visitors.
In the second half, we started how we meant to go on, Joe Neal controlled a through ball running out wide, before squaring to Ben Hunter, but his effort was blocked. Tom Dickens and Charlie Lewis had a solid first half, and it looked to be continuing when ‘Oz’ used his pace to catch the striker who had a fair head start. We started to up the ante, and Reuben Swann was at the fore-front of the highly applied pressure, with his change of pace, he forced the defender into a clumsy challenge in the penalty area... but a corner was given instead.
We made some attacking changes, Ola Bello replacing skipper Romario, who put in a brilliant performance, playing with so much confidence to drive at players, a feeling around the ground something would happen when he had the ball at his feet. Kaya Donohoe also came on in replacement of Olu. Olu putting in his usual shift of running back and forth, making crunching challenges, and delightful dribbles, albeit in a deeper role with the absence of JT.
As we approached the final minutes, completely against the run of play Berkhamsted scored an absolute stunner; Jordan Fredrick smashing a sublime shot into the top corner from the edge of the box after a corner, sparking wild celebrations, surely the winner... or was it?
As the Yellows looked to find a way to get an equaliser, Bello won a corner, Ben Hunter whipped it in and Berkhamsted managed to head it away... only as far as Micheal who took a touch, looked to shoot, before playing a smart short pass to Joe Neal on the edge of the area. Neal, got passed one, went passed a second and let fly... AND OH MY GOODNESS WHAT A GOAL IT WAS! 91st minute, edge of the area, bodies in the way, but the Berkhamsted ‘keeper was rooted to the spot. “OHHHHHHH YA BEAUTY, WHAT A HIT SON, WHAT A HIT”.
We then went on another attack deep into stoppage time. Ollie Brown found his way into the penalty area, and he squared it to Micheal, who hit it first time, and the goalkeeper produced a top, top save, with his leg. The rebound was blocked for a corner, but that was that for the match.
I'm not sure about you, but my nerves can’t take all the 90th minute drama... but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
What a Bank Holiday weekend, our first win and a 90th minute goal! I must say on Friday night I would most definitely have taken four points from six!
We now go into the FA Cup next Saturday against Mildenhall... and don’t we all love a cup run... especially an FA Cup run.
UP THE SUDS.
