It was an all-square contest in Suffolk, as newly promoted Sudbury held Barwell to a 1-1 draw, in pouring rain, on the opening day of the season.
The hosts took the lead early on as Joe Neal latched on to a poor back pass to poke in to the Barwell net, cueing huge celebrations behind the goal and on the pitch. It was nearly two not long after, as Micheal Bareck shimmied around the edge of the penalty area before hitting his shot against the outside of cross bar and post..
On the 16th minute, the away side equalised. Ollie Brown was caught in possession and Davidson-Miller heading into an empty net after the ball was dinked back across the face of the goal.
The half died down as the rain became heavier with few chances for either side, a midfield battle.
Joe Neal, already having one goal to his name, forced a fine save by the Barwell ‘keeper to begin the second half. However, Barwell started to edge control of the ball causing an increase in the shots towards James Bradbrook in the Sudbury goal, forcing him to make a few superb saves to keep the visitors at bay.
The hosts still made their presence in the game known though, Neal and Bareck linking up on the counter, before Bareck dragged his shot wide.
Jamie Bennett became the latest AFC Sudbury Academy student to make his first team debut and at Step 3 no less as he replaced Bareck with 15 to go.
There was nearly a final twist as Neal finished his superb shift by almost forcing another defensive mistake.
However, there was to be no late winner, as the contest ended in a hard-fought point for both sides.
