Our final pre season friendly for the 19-20 season saw us face a youthful Colchester United side on a gorgeous summers evening. A decent crowd saw Colchester start the game at a good rate, attacking Sudbury from the off. For the first 10 minutes or so it looked like it would be a case of chasing shadows but Sudbury came to terms and started to impose themselves on the match. Colchester had more flair but it was Sudbury who were all of a sudden using the ball far more effectively.
On 11 minutes, Reece Harris who had started to see more of the ball, whipped in a peach of a cross from the left and Sean Marks, who before tonight had yet to score in a Sudbury shirt, was on the end to glance the ball with the outside of his foot, past the stranded Colchester keeper. All of a sudden the game looked very different indeed and it was Sudbury who were piling forward now.
On 17 minutes, Reece Harris fires in a shot from the edge of the box, that effort is blocked but is swept up by that man Sean Marks who's first effort is blocked by the keeper but not his second as he rolled the ball into the net at an angle to notch his and Sudbury's second of the night. Colchester attacked sporadically and looked dangerous in flashes but it was Sudbury who maintained the greater threat with Liam Bennett turning his marker inside out time and again and on 34 minutes the yellows took further advantage of their shell shocked visitors. Maycock chipping to the far post when Billy Holland did well to cut the ball back across goal for Sean ' i've not scored yet for Sudbury ' Marks to slot in his and Sudbury's third of the evening.
Colchester would have been glad of the half time whistle when it came as they had lost their way at this point.
There was bound to be a reaction from the professional side and in the second half it arrived. Just before the hour mark a fierce rising drive from just outside the box from Colchester's no 16 gave Walker no chance as it flashed into the top corner.
Oooooh game on clearly but just 60 seconds later and Sean Marks wasn't having any of that nonsense. An absolute peach of a deep cross by Harris saw the goal machine bag his fourth of the night with a fine header back across goal. Sudbury's 4th of the night and the best of the lot...so far, to restore the 3 goal cushion.
Ahhhh so we could breath easier now, surely that would take the wind out of Colchester sails for good.
Or maybe not as on 67 minutes Poku with virtually no backlift at all, fired Colchester back into the game from just inside the box. He jinked and turned, chopped and twisted and when you thought he was maybe going nowhere... bang 4-2. Game back on clearly.
69 minutes and if Sudbury didn't know they were in a game yet they surely would now. Louis Dunne firing a free kick home from 25 yards and bent over the wall and gave Walker no chance. A fantastic strike and worthy of putting Colchester right back in the game.
The script was written now for Colchester to steamroller Sudbury. They had the momentum and where pushing forward at every opportunity but resolute defending and a backs against the wall attitude kept their professional adversaries at bay.. until with 10 minutes to go 17 year old Freddie King found a bit of space in the Colchester box following a rare Sudbury corner, to fire home and surely put the game beyond the visitors.
On 83 minutes the scoring was completed and the best was saved until last when King broke quickly inside the Colchester half and laid the ball into the path of Panashe Mundawarara tearing into right hand side of the penalty area. I expected the ball to end up on the training fields at the end of the ground as Panashe hit the ball first time but instead it went like an exocet missile inside the keepers right hand post and Sudbury had their 6th of the night. Sudbury 6 Colchester 3... and relax
