Meet the Manager - Aaron Pengelly

Steve Screech12 Feb 2024 - 10:58

Aaron's up next in the hot seat

In the hot seat this week we have U15 Blues coach - Aaron Pengelly
Come on Aaron, time to spill the beans..

What professional team do you support?

If this was 10 years ago, I’d be bragging… Chelsea. My Dad is London-born and bred, been down the Bridge several times throughout my childhood, I hope we can get back to where we belong!

Who are your Top 3 players and why?

R9 – The most talented striker of all time, if only his knees worked!!!
Frank Lampard – Chelsea legend, used to absolutely love watching him.
Jude Bellingham – Love his career route. Instead of moving to the Premier League, I love how he has gone abroad to Germany to develop, and then onto the biggest club in the World, where he is dominating. More players should follow his route in my opinion.

Who has been the biggest influence on your football career?

Definitely my Dad. He got me into Football from a young age, been to pretty much most of my games, including the ones I coach. Always giving me great advice! I also have to thank Craig Power and Jody Downs, they got me into coaching at 16 years old while I was playing at the academy. 8 years later I am still here coaching the same team with Jody!

What has been the proudest moment of your footballing career?

Playing wise was getting to the English Schools National Cup final when I was U13 age group. We played at Walsall’s stadium, narrowly losing to a school filled with players from Blackburn, Bolton, and Oldham Academy.

Coaching wise is winning back-to-back EJA league titles U13 & U14, also getting to a County Cup final! Really proud with the progression of our boys.

Choose 3 words to describe yourself
Positive – I like to keep a positive attitude when coaching, giving constructive feedback instead of negatively shouting.
Fun – I always try to keep my sessions fun, I know from player experience that a boring session equals less intensity and effort!
Developer – Developing players is key for me, the aim is for every single player to have improved once they have left us, whenever that is!

You are a firm believer in our CORE values and fair play because…

The CORE values are vital in developing players, whilst also giving them good life skills to progress forwards when they move into adulthood. Using these core values in our coaching methods will hopefully make our players into good young human beings!

My 3 tracks for the pre-match playlist are?

Anything Drum & Bass! It is what I DJ on weekends at shows. I am glad to know all the boys in the changing room play it!

Any other sports you enjoy playing or watching?

Absolutely love playing pool! I go down the Snooker Club every week with my friends. I love watching Athletics, as this is a Sport I always used to do throughout my childhood.

Do you have advice for players to become the best that they can be?

Be committed and obsessed. Every top-level player is absolutely obsessed with improving their ability. This means work has hard as possible in training, listen, and take on advice given. Also, I would try to do extra hours outside of training, working on your weaknesses to make yourself an all-rounded player.

Well i think we definitely know a little more about Aaron now, thanks for your time.
Next up.... hmmmm who shall we go for?
