Long Melford U12’s Vs AFC Sudbury

Kevin Pettet23 Apr 2023 - 14:39

Honours shared in the local Derby

Today we travelled to the Stoneylands for a lunch time kick off against our local rivals, Ling Melford.

Sudbury, still in with a mathematical chance of winning the league, started quickly with Dylan chasing down the ball from kick off and won the ball before sliding it through to Jack V who turned and played in Leo, but his shot was blocked by the Melford defender.

Some good attacking play soon after by Sudbury, but they couldn’t find the final pass.

Melford counter attack was dealt with well by Jack D.

Jack V was non stop running and chased down what looked like a lost cause and got his foot on the ball to hook it goalwards, only for the Melford defender to get back and clear.

Big throw from Tommy, who started the game in goal today, was well controlled by Leo but he couldn’t keep his shot down.

Some nice link up play between between Dougie, Leo & Jack V was cleared and collected by Tommy. He again throw the ball long and Leo battled to win the ball before drilling home to make it 1-0.

Great defensive play from Jack D to win the ball back and set us away on the counter which came to nothing.

Another effort from Leo going over.

Dylan playing brilliantly on the right, drove his team forward from his own half.

Great pressing from the front 2 with Leo and Jack V not giving the Melford defenders a moments peace.

Ollie dropping in at RCB, winning the ball back and setting us away on the attack again.

Great play again from the boys, with Dougie winning the ball in defence and playing it forward to Jack V who slipped it to Leo and spun his defender, but he couldn’t quite catch up to the return pass from Leo.

Dylan again picking the ball up on the right, fizzed a ball across the box that just eluded the attackers.

Some brilliant pass and move football on the right, this time from Ollie, Dylan, Jude and Jack V and he slipped Dylan in on the right, but we couldn’t make it count and the ball was forced out for a corner.

Melford started to grow in confidence and we’re coming into the game more and more now.

Nice 1-2 football between Max and Leo in the left that Melford defended well.

Jack V through ball to Leo, but his touch just got away from him and the danger was cleared.

Ball across from Max on the left to Jack V in the box, used his strength well to hold off the defender but was then outnumbered before he could get his shot away.

Good covering from Jude in the centre of the pitch.

Half time 0-1.

Melford started the 2nd half the better of the 2 teams.

Sudbury finally waking up saw Jude win the ball back and play it to Leo who knocked it out wide to Sasha who passed to Max but his shot/cross was just out of reach for Jack V.

Great battling from Max in the left saw the loose ball find it’s way out to Jude on the edge of the box but he mistimed his left foot shot and the danger was cleared.

Jack V picked up the ball in the centre of the pitch and released Leo who took it past his defender before unleashing a pile driver that the keeper tipped round the post.

Ollie win the ball back from the resulting corner and played the ball into the box but Leo’s touch got away from him and was collected by the keeper.

Melford really starting to apply pressure on the Sudbury back line now.

Leo collecting the ball with his back to go, turned and played in Max who raced past his defender only for play to be stopped for a bad offside call.

Another attack down the left saw a heavy touch make it easy for the keeper to come out and collect.

Great ball forward from Dougie that Max tried to take round the keeper, but he had read it well and came out to collect.

Max again out through on goal and his effort was well saved by the Melford keeper who was doing everything he could to keep his team in the game.

Throw on the left from Max was half cleared and found it’s way to Sasha who’s first time shot went just over the bar.

Another great ball forward from Dougie to Max, but his effort was shin saved.

Things were getting nervy for the Sudbury team but Ollie, Tommy and Freddie were winning their battles, but it looked for a moment that Melford had equalised when a looping shot rolled down the back of the net, but luckily it was the outside of the net.

Long range effort from Dougie was well saved.

With moments left, the ball was played long by Sudbury and on the edge of the Melford box the Melford player drive forward, unchallenged and passed to his team mate who again was unchallenged. The Melford player then appeared to cross the ball in, but it went up and over Harry and into the back of the net and our players fell to their knees in despair whilst the Melford players celebrated their late equaliser.

There was only enough time left for the game to re-start before the final whistle blew and our players looked a beaten team.

Final score 1-1.

Unfortunately not the result I felt our boys deserved today, but they have had an amazing season and go into the last game against the Blues with the possibility of finishing 2nd in the league still alive.

Todays Man Of The Match is coming into form at the same time as his favourite player, Diego Jota. He was a constant threat down the right and was great defensively too. Well done Dylan.

Chin up boys and we go again one more time in our last game of the season next week.
