AFC Sudbury can confirm that club captain Jake Turner has announced he will retire from football at the end of the current season.
JT, who has been a central figure both on and off the pitch, will bring the curtain down on a distinguished spell with the club having made 214 appearances and scored 12 goals for the Suds.
Since joining the Suds, Jake has embodied everything the club stands for – commitment, leadership, and passion. Appointed captain ahead of the 2023/24 season, he has led the side with distinction during one of the most competitive periods in the club’s history.
One of the standout moments of his career came when he scored the winning goal in the Isthmian League North Division play-off final, securing Step 3 football for the club – a moment that will live long in the memory of supporters.
Speaking on his decision, JT said:
"After a lot of thought, I’ve decided that this will be my final season playing football.
600+ games, a few screamers, more tackles, and now out!
The last 5 years here at AFC has been a roller coaster! There have been some really amazing moments - 1st round of the FA Cup, play off success and winning goal, Great Escape times two and arguably the most difficult ending with this year's relegation.
It’s been a privilege to captain at this club. No matter the challenges, I’ve always tried to lead in the right way and give everything I can.
Thank you to everyone who’s supported me during my time here - from the gaffers past and present, to the volunteers, to all the players and of course the fans.
I wish the club all the best moving forward - over and out - JT."
Current AFC Sudbury Manager David Hennessey comments, “I’m going to keep it simple and just say thank you to an incredible servant to this football club. The word legend is thrown around quite casually in football, but JT is without doubt a Sudbury legend. Thank you skip.”
Jake will continue to lead the side for the remainder of the season, with supporters encouraged to show their appreciation as he makes his final appearances in an AFC Sudbury shirt.
Everyone at AFC Sudbury would like to thank Jake for his outstanding service wishes him all the best in whatever he does next.
Thank you JT. Captain. Leader. Legend.
