The AFC Sudbury Girls Academy has enjoyed a successful start to what is only its second season. Pride of place in early season achievements was on 7th October when we fielded TWO Academy Girls Teams on a Wednesday afternoon for the first time AND won both games!
One squad played at home in the National Football Youth League (NFYL) v AFC Bournemouth and completed a notable 6-2 victory. Our scorers being Becca Stephenson (3), Beth Scrivener, Evie Creaton & Tye Smith. At the same time, we had a squad away at Hills Road Cambridge, chalking up yet another victory (5-0) this time the scorers being Jess Allen (3), Sophie Farrow and Kaitlin Elsey, along with a well earned clean sheet!
With the matches coming thick and fast now the following week we travelled to EDSV in a double header with the NFYL team narrowly losing 2-0 to a team that are favourites to win the southern section. The other game was a real end to end thriller of which we came out 5-4 winners! Jess Allen notching up an impressive 4 goals in this game.
Just before the break half term break we continued with TWO matches on a Wednesday with an away 2-2 draw in the NFYL vs Tottenham Hotspur, goals coming from Georgia Thorpe and Jess Allen. The home match was a goalfest under the watchful eye of our VEO technology that might have struggled to keep up with our girls as we ran away victorious against a Tottenham Hotspur team from City College.
New full time staff coaches Beth Morrell and Darren Scoulding have really found a groove the last few weeks, with this impressive run of fixtures and results. With the England Colleges National Premier League starting the first week back after half term as well as the English Schools Super League we are definitely in a really good place to attack the back end of 2020.
We are leading the way with 35 full-time girls on our football academy programme which is unrivalled in the region and the quality of football has been a pleasure to watch by the growing number of AFC Sudbury supporters who are coming along on Wednesday afternoons to watch these girls play.
Captain Paige Clemenson has had a number of offers from Colleges in the USA as she plans her exit route out of the academy in what will be the first year of girls graduations from our Academy in the Summer of 2021. The new first year girls are settling in very well and have contributed so much to the overall academy this year already. A first half term that we couldn’t have wished anymore from these talented bunch of girls.
Looking ahead to the new intake for September 2021, we are holding our first open training session this coming Friday (30th Oct) from 10am to 12pm on the 3G. For further details please contact Beth Morrell bethmorrell.afc@gmail.com or Darren Scoulding darrenscoulding.afc@gmail.com
