It was Tuesday Night Delight for the Yellows, as we came from 0-1 down to earn a massive three points in our race for survival.
We lined up with Carter in goal, a back line of Harrison, Jeffery, Lambe, and Dodd, with Bezant, Jouvenel, and Frazzoni holding down the fort in the middle, and in attack Allen and Penny on the wing with Leyer in the middle. We had a strong bench of Provan, Egan, Goodwin, Brame, and Drake. Incredible options to have off the bench.
We started well, once again. Alex had a shot very well saved inside eight minutes. Ten minutes later, Alex found herself in a golden position to open the score, after the goalie had failed to get a strong enough hand on the cross, but as the ball fell to Alex, she hit her shot just wide. Somehow, thirty seconds later, the visitors went up the other end and Fleming scored a fantastic goal from 25 yards out. That goal had seemed to knock our confidence a bit, though we quickly recomposed and began to knock on the door once again. Victoria Leyer forced the ‘keeper to make a good save, after a shot from a narrow angle.
Half-Time: AFC Sudbury 0-1 Cambridge City
In the second half, Millie was called straight into action - as she made a fantastic fingertip stop to deny an effort that looked to be finding its way into the top corner. With 25 minutes to go, we went inches away from equalising; Eva delivered a fantastic cross into the box, but Jeffers hit her shot just over the bar from inside the 18-yard box. However, we were not going to be denied for long, as a towering header from Ali Lambe got us level. A delightful corner was whipped into the box by Jeffers, and Ali produced the definition of a bullet header. With confidence sky high, we stayed focused and stayed on top. As we ticked into the 90 minutes, you could feel the tension in the air, but this team just do not give up, do they? Eva picked the ball up on the right-hand side, drove at goal and crossed a super ball which Chloe Brame, off the bench, managed to head into the bottom corner. The ref decided to add 10 minutes stoppage time, for no clear reason, but despite having to endure some pressure during that, we earned a HUGE three points.
Full-Time: AFC Sudbury 2-1 Cambridge City
Well, what can I say? Mentality Monsters. That is what this team is. Even when it wasn’t quite going our way, we dug deep and earned a very well deserved three points. Next up, we play Needham Market in the Suffolk Cup, so get yourselves down to Bury on Sunday!
