Ladies progress through in the FA Cup
A tight game sees the Ladies progress
In a break from the league, Sudbury ladies travelled to Chelmsford City ladies for the first round qualifier of the SSE Women’s FA Cup.
With Sudbury looking to put last week’s disappointing result behind them, they could be forgiven for being initially cautious. This wasn’t the case, as the ladies looked calm and composed in possession from the off, a stark contrast to previous games.
Sudbury’s first chance came on 7 minutes after Charley Roach-Smith was played through on goal with a nice ball over the top. She took her shot first time, however it went narrowly over.
On 15 minutes, a ball was cleared from a Sudbury corner and the resulting volley from Mia Etheridge looped high and looked to be going in, before the Chelmsford goalkeeper made it back to her line to make the save.
Chelmsford looked to take the lead with a couple of chances from lobbed passes in behind the Sudbury defence, however some smart saves from Sudbury keeper Penny Everett kept the score level.
The deadlock was finally broken on 33 minutes after a ball over the top found Roach-smith who controlled well before finding Etheridge with a through ball which she slammed across the keeper and in off the far post to make it 0-1.
In the remaining first half minutes, Sudbury demonstrated good game management to ensure they went into the break with the lead.
The second half began with some early pressure from Chelmsford, and thanks to some good defending from the Sudbury back four, Chelmsford were unable to find their equaliser.
After a quiet opening 25 minutes of the second half in which both sides shared possession equally, Sudbury almost doubled their lead from a corner, the ball initially falling to the edge of the area for an Emma Squirrell shot. Her shot was blocked, however she was able to regain the ball and play through Marie Seabrook who was only prevented from scoring by a fantastic Chelmsford City challenge.
It was a hot day and with cramp setting in for a number of Sudbury players, Chelmsford almost equalized late on, another ball in behind that was lifted over Everett in goal and also over the crossbar.
Sudbury had late chances to assure victory, with several headers sent goal-ward from corners, only for one to hit the post and another to be saved down low by the keeper. The game finished 0-1 and Sudbury are through to the next round.
It was a fantastic performance from the Sudbury Ladies, who managed the game well and ensured their victory.
Full time 0-1
