AFC Sudbury started the match with a much changed side from the midweek victory over FC Romania.
The match started at a fast pace with the ball seeing both ends of the pitch very quickly, an early free kick for Mildenhall was dealt with by the AFC defense, whilst at the other end a couple of half chances saw Jordan Blackwell and Callum Harrison shoot just wide. On 20 minutes Mildenhall created a good opening down the right and forced a corner, this led to the ball being delivered in and initially cleared but it fell to joe Asensi who shot from almost 30 yards had to be well saved by Paul Walker in the AFC goal. Mildenhall were having the better play now and on 23 minutes created another chance which again needed Paul Walker to be on top form and save a point blank shot, however from this AFC managed to counter attack and three on two they should have done better as Harrison and Blackwell went clear, the ball however had different ideas and decided to bog down under Callums feet meaning he was unable to get a decent shot away. This was the best opportunity of the match so far and one which should have lead to a goal. This spurred Sudbury on, another chance came with good work down the right and a whipped in ball almost glanced in by a Mildenhall defender. Then Ben Hunter found himself in some space, he dropped a shoulder round a defender and shot, but just over. The next 10 minutes was all AFC, numerous chances fell in front of goal but all missed the target.
With 37 minutes on the clock AFC had another corner, played short from the right hand side and then sent over to the far post and Daryl Coakley was there to head in from 8 yards. A well worked and deserved goal. AFC managed to control the game and the half time whistle soon blew.
The second half saw the introduction of the dangerous John Sands for the visitors as they now had to chase the match looking for a goal and it was not long before they created a great opening and flashing a shot inches wide of the goal with Walker fully stretched. AFC managed to keep their fast tempo play going, a trait which had seen them do well in the last few matches. Billy Holland had a great 25 yard effort before Blackwell was sent through, the keeper managing to save his effort. Hunter also seeing a looping effort go just over. Then on 67 minutes with Mildenhall pushing up the field AFC managed to break away, Blackwell from midfield running strongly at the defense with Phil Kelly's run splitting the defense he pushed the ball through and Kelly, one on one with the keeper made no mistake putting this FA Cup tie to bed. 2-0.
Several yellow cards we seen in the final 20 minutes for the visitors as their frustration overflowed. There was one further golden chance for AFC when McKenzie was left at the far post and when electing to use his foot instead of his head missed an almost certain goal. 4 minutes of injury time followed. AFC managed to progress with a strong performance which will see their name in the draw on Tuesday.
Man of the match as voted for by our match Sponsors DRS Doors was the AFC Sudbury No. 4 - Billy Holland, his second home MOTM in a row.
AFC now travel to Mildenhall on Bank Holiday Monday for league action.
