YDP - The Dan Smith Story
AFC Academy & Youth Development Phase 15 of 16

15. YDP - The Dan Smith Story

I joined AFC Sudbury at U13’s in their Eastern Junior Alliance Team after being released from Ipswich Town Academy, where I had been playing from the age of eight.
The reason I wanted to play for AFC Sudbury was because of the opportunities they offered me through the next stage in my development of football in my youth career. Playing at this level really gave me the confidence to develop outside of the academy system.
The facilities at AFC Sudbury are the best in the area and the chance to train and play on the stadium pitch every week was a big attraction.
Through my four years at AFC Sudbury (U13-16) I have been able to work with top level coaches and AFC academy staff who I can say have massively helped my development in football.
Over the course of four years, I have won two league titles, two county cups, one EJA champions league and have been selected for Suffolk Schools and the Eastern Junior Alliance Rep squad.
I have also played U18 Football with the Academy Full Time players which is a great experience. Just after I turned 16, I was given the chance to play Senior adult football for AFC Sudbury Reserves in the Thurlow Nunn League and have played lots of games for them, which has been an excellent opportunity for me.
I have also been on three football tours, to Holland, Scotland and Wales with the club.
Now I have completed my two years at the academy of which in the second year I was named Academy Boys Captain, I am off to the USA to play college soccer after gaining a scholarship. I am extremely proud to have gone all the way through the Acadey from U13-18.
I would recommend any young player who has an opportunity to play at this amazing football club, to take the offer as I have thoroughly enjoyed the past four years in the YDP
