Monday 5th and Tuesday 6th of August 2019 were not ordinary days at the AFC Sudbury Academy.

The start of the week certainly got us into the full swing of the 2019/20 season! Over the course of the two days we had our full-time scholars and a selection of U16 boys and girls playing across no fewer than 6 fixtures!

Around 44 boys and 27 girls ranging from U16-U18 played in these matches and what an experience it was..

First up was the U17 Boys playing against our new friends Sunderland FC FOL Scholars as part one of the double header which preceded the launch of the newly formed AFC Sudbury Girls Academy. Then the Following morning the youngsters from the North East were back at AFC Sudbury to play their second match of the mni-tour this time against a mixture of our younger boys and girls in two more fantastic games.

The evening saw the academy boys field a complete team of U18 (second year) Full-Time Scholars in the opening Thurlow Nunn League fixture at neighbours Haverhill Borough, the sixth game that our academy had interest in was the AFC Sudbury First Team 20th Anniversary Fixture against Colchester Utd at the Mel group stadium with current Scholars Liam Bennett, Harry Critchley, Freddie King and Lewis O’ Malley all playing.

Jamie Souza Head Coach of the AFC Sudbury Girls Football Academy had this to say about the historic launch game ‘I was really proud to see our girls give as good as they got for long periods. We maybe just lacked a cutting edge and a lack of familiarity which is understandable considering we have only been a group for 3 weeks’

‘What it has given us as coaching staff is a real insight to how the girls fit into an 11-a-side team, there are strengths and areas we can improve on right away. Our girls are hungry to learn and I expect to see rapid improvements over the next 4 or 6 weeks. I believe they are fantastic role models and they are an absolute credit to local girl's and women's football.’

Academy Director Danny Laws was full of praise for the volunteers, supporters and staff of both AFC Sudbury and Sunderland.

‘for the academy to have a couple of days like we have just experienced it just doesn't happen without the hard work and dedication of the people behind the scenes, so I would personally like to thank everyone who contributed towards a very busy two days!’
