Eight goal thriller at The MEL Group Stadium

On a night where the team with the worst away record (Brentwood) played the team with the worst home record (AFC Sudbury), spectators did probably not expect much more than a 0-0.
They were wrong............!

The match started at a ferocious pace and AFC scored in the second minute, Joe Whight crossed the ball and when the defense failed to clear, Callum Harrison was then to slot it home. It only took a further 5 minutes for AFC to double their lead, Billy Hollands cross to the far post is met by Phil Kelly who out jump the defense to head home, 2-0 (7 minutes). The pressure did not atop, on 15 minutes Daryl Coakleys long ball splits the defense and Kelly latches on and finishes one on one. 3-0 (15 minutes).
Reece Harris was the nect to put the all into the net, however, the linesman deemed offside, a decision which did look very questionable.
Brentwood then gave themselves a lifeline as from a corner the ball sails straight into the goal at the far post.
Then the action returned to the other end, Tom Monks powerful run past the defense ended with a great effort beating the keeper, but not the post, with the rebounded ball rolling straight to the keeper.
Brentwood then made a substitution to change things up, this certainly did the trick as they looked a different team as half time approached. It was on 43 minutes when the away team struck again with a great goal. Half Time!

Only five minutes into the second half, the comeback was complete. From a corner the ball is headed in at the far post. 3-3. It was then the visitors who could have taken the lead, a free kick around 20 yards out dipped onto the crossbar.
However, the visitors did not continue their pressing football, it was Sudbury who decided to go and win the match and pressed hard for the final 20 minutes. Chances fell for Whight, Coakley and Harris, before Kelly completed his hat trick, a great ball through from Harrison saw Kelly burst into the area and calmly slot home to regain the advantage to Sudbury with 10 minutes left to play. However, it was all Sudbury now with the visitors pressing again Sudbury were able to play fast counter attacking football and as the final minutes ticked away, a long ball to Kelly saw him round defender and keeper wide on the edge of the area, he then fired in a pin point cross for Harrison to blast home from a couple of yards out. 5-3 game over.

After struggling for goals at home AFC Sudbury have hit five in one match, three for the outstanding Phil Kelly (Pictured above with the match ball, lovingly signed by his team mates).

Next up for AFC Sudbury is another home tie on Saturday against Grays Athletic, this match is being kindly sponsored by EJS Photography.
