AFC Sudbury, a football club playing in the south of the county of Suffolk, is commemorating former players and officials of the club, who sadly gave their lives during World War 1. The club is holding a Remembrance Weekend celebration to coincide with a game that it is hosting on Saturday November 10th against Basildon with a 3pm kick off.
From research undertaken by the club with the assistance of the British Legion, forces charities and local archives, we have been able to find five representatives of Sudbury Town (part of the history of the club leading to AFC Sudbury in its current guise) and are looking to find family members who we would like to invite to the game to help commemorate their memories.

The five that we have been able to find are:
Corporal Robert Charles Bristow. The club’s secretary, was born in Norfolk. The 1911 census shows him as a school teacher living in lodging in Sudbury. We think he may have moved from Sudbury before enlisting as his papers show he enlisted in Spalding and served in the Lincolnshire Regiment. He died unmarried and his personal effects were left to his father.

Captain Raymond Linay Armes. A player. Born Kings Lynn in 1879. In 1911 he was living in Chilton with his brother William Morris and sister Kathleen. All were single and in their 30s. Raymond and William appear to have owned a factory making mats. Commissioned from the ranks, originally a Sgt in the Army Service Corps before being commissioned into the North Staffordshire Regiment. He received a Mention in Dispatches.

Lt Colonel William Morris Armes. A player. Brother of Raymond and also born in Kings Lynn in 1873 and served in the Suffolk Regiment He may have been a member of the Territorial Army pre war.

Private James William Moulton. A player Was born and enlisted in Sudbury, he married his wife, Mabel, in 1907 and a son, also James William was born in 1908. There appear to be a number of Moultons living in Suffolk, some named James William, who may be related.

Lance Corporal Harry Edward Malyon. A player. Harry was born in Burton on Trent in 1877 & moved, originally to Cavendish and then to Sudbury with his family, his father was a malster. Although he enlisted at Sudbury he served in the East Surrey Regiment. This was not unusual as men were sent where they were needed most.

He married his wife Jane in 1901 but sadly died on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.

If anybody reading this letter knows anything that would enable us to contact any relatives of the five mentioned above then do please get in touch with us by email to:
andrew.long@afcsudbury.co.uk
Or please call the club on 01787 376213

We would be extremely grateful and would help the club and its supporters to properly remember their fallen heroes

Kind regards
Andrew Long
AFC Sudbury
